A smart lock is the one upgrade that removes keys from your life entirely — open with a code, a fingerprint or your phone. And the question we get asked most in Haifa has a good answer: yes, it works on an Israeli steel security door (pladelet), including Rav Bariach multi-point mechanisms. That is actually most of what we install.
Smart locks on a steel door — how it actually works
People assume smart locks only suit wooden doors. Not so. On a pladelet we fit the smart unit over the existing multi-point mechanism:
- Your door is not modified structurally. No new holes through the steel plate in most installs.
- The original key still works. The mechanical cylinder stays as a backup — important for a power failure or a flat battery.
- All the bolts still engage. You keep the full security of the multi-point mechanism and gain keyless entry on top.
What we install — and only what we install

We fit two brands, because these are the two we know inside out and can service afterwards:
- Yale — the established name. Reliable, widely supported, good app. Includes retrofit models that mount over your existing cylinder without changing the outside of the door at all.
- eLock — a stronger fit for Israeli steel doors, with fingerprint, code, card and app options, and handle designs made for pladelet.
If a locksmith offers you a brand nobody can service in a year, ask who repairs it when it fails. We would rather fit two brands well than ten badly.
Ways to open it
- Fingerprint — fastest, and the favourite in family homes.
- Code — ideal for cleaners, guests and short-term rentals: give a code, change it later.
- Phone / app — open remotely, and see a log of who came in and when.
- Card or tag — good for children and older family members.
- The original key — always kept as a fallback.
Who this is genuinely worth it for
- Short-term rental hosts. No key handovers, no lockbox, no meeting guests at midnight. A new code per booking.
- Families with children. No more lost keys, and you get a notification when they get home.
- Anyone with a cleaner or carer coming regularly. A code you can revoke, instead of a copied key you cannot.
- People who keep locking themselves out. If you have called a locksmith twice this year, this pays for itself.
And who it is not for: if you rarely lose keys and nobody else needs access, a good security cylinder does the job for a fraction of the price. We will tell you that on the phone.
The two questions everyone asks
- "What if the battery dies?" It warns you for weeks first, on the keypad and in the app. If you ignore every warning, you still have the mechanical key. Batteries typically last 8–12 months.
- "What about a power cut?" Nothing happens — these locks run on their own batteries, not on mains power.

🔧 From the field — fitting a Yale Linus L2: the fitting itself takes about 40–50 minutes, plus roughly half an hour showing the customer how to use the app and what the smart lock can do. In our experience the Linus L2 suits every type of door. Customers mostly choose it because no holes are drilled in the door, and the ordinary mechanical key keeps working. It is a very reliable lock, and Yale's customer service is excellent.
